Gwendolyn Anderson Obituary

Gwendolyn “Gwen” Rodgers Anderson died peacefully on Sunday, March 24, 2024. Her visitation will be held on Friday, March 29, at Belk Funeral Home from 6 to 8 pm. Funeral services will take place on Saturday, March 30, at First Church of God in Darlington at 2 pm. Burial will follow in Grove Hill Cemetery.

Gwen was born in Hartsville to the late John Nelson Rodgers and Rosa Courtney Rodgers on May 26, 1942. She attended Hartsville High School. At 19, she married the love of her life, Boyd Anderson, at the Twitty United Methodist Church in Hartsville on August 18, 1962. They were married for 43 years until his death.

She is survived by her two daughters, Rhonda (Lee) Richardson of Darlington and Laura (Robert) Forehand of Florence; 6 grandchildren, Austin Harrelson, Harrison Forehand, Caleb Forehand, Josh, Jeff, and Amanda Richardson, who were her most precious treasures. In addition, she is survived by her sister, Loretta Harbuck of Americus, Georgia, and many nieces and nephews. Gwen was predeceased by her siblings Wesley and Warren Arthur Rodgers.

Gwen was a Godly wife, mother, grandmother, friend, and loved by so many. She worked hard all her life. Gwen worked for Roses Dime Store and Woods Five and Dime for a short time early on in her life. She also worked for First Church of God daycare for several years. Her most dedicated profession of 43 years, where she was affectionately known as “Mum,” was loving and caring for kids at her in-home daycare from the time they were newborns until they were ready to attend school. She touched many children’s lives, and her Godly example was evident daily.

Gwen was compassionate, kind, honest, loving, and beautiful inside and out. Her quiet spirit and beautiful smile will always be remembered. She always made time for others when you needed someone to talk to and could keep it confidential. She was timeless, elegant, and loved fashion. Shopping and weekend trips to the mountains were two of her favorite things. She loved reading her bible and devotionals, praying for others, and doing crossword puzzles. Watching QVC and the Hallmark channel were also two of her favorite pastimes. Her most important way to spend her time was with her family. Christmas and birthdays were always big celebrations. To know her was to love her. To the many lives she touched, she will truly be missed and remembered. Her legacy will live on in our heart’s forever.

We are truly thankful for all of the care she was given in the last few years. So many people invested their time to ensure she was well cared for. To the many doctors, nurses, family, and friends, we are forever grateful.

In lieu of flowers, memorials can be made in her honor to First Church of God’s Children’s Program, 620 N. Main Street, Darlington, SC 29532, and the McLeod Hospice House.
