Tommy Gunn Obituary

Thomas Hollis Gunn of Hartsville, SC, entered into eternal rest in the early morning hours of Friday, March 29th, surrounded by family. He was compassionately cared for at the McLeod Hospice House in Florence, SC, after a long battle with leukemia and heart disease. Thomas was 77 years old. Thomas was born in Athens, GA on March 5, 1947 to Thomas Milton and Annie Hazel (Hollis) Gunn while his father attended the University of Georgia. As a result, he was a lifelong avid Georgia Bulldog fan, which has passed on to his children and grandchildren. Thomas grew up in Charlotte, NC and attended Myers Park High School. He then attended Wofford College in Spartanburg, SC, where he graduated with a degree in Psychology. Shortly after college, he entered the pest control business, eventually purchasing a popular small company in Greenville, NC with his father. This business continued to do well and expand until his father’s sudden death in 1984. Afterwhich Thomas eventually sold the business and ventured into other opportunities. Thomas retired in 2002 after spending a few years back in pest control service. Thomas was predeceased by his mother, Annie Hazel (Hollis) Gunn; his father, Thomas Milton Gunn, and a daughter, Angela Lee. He is survived by his sister, Diane Gunn Teague of Kernersville, NC; his former wife, Candy Collins of Charleston, SC; his children, Hollis Milton (Julie) of Mount Pleasant, SC; Ashley Gunn Rogers (Derek) of Hartsville, SC; and Rev Matthew Gunn (Anna) of Irmo, SC; and his nine grandchildren: Thomas Milton (26), Daniel Nelson (23), James Colson (20), Jonathan Watford (18), and Makayla Catherine (11) of Mount Pleasant, SC; Victoria Lynn (18) of Hartsville, SC; and Mollie Grace (13), Hazel Katherine (10), and Baker Lewis (5) of Irmo, SC. Thomas loved golf, watching college sports, cheering on his beloved Atlanta Braves, and fishing, especially pier fishing. Whenever he could go, he usually was the last one to leave. As other anglers would depart, often you could sense they stayed a little longer than anticipated, enjoying their brief time with him, swapping fish stories, laughing, and enjoying the successes and failures of their efforts that day. Thomas never met a stranger, and he was the kind of person who was easy to like. Thomas also loved more than anything his children and grandchildren and spending time with them. He was very proud of them all. He truly enjoyed their successes and looked forward to boasting about them at any opportunity. And, his grandchildren treasured the times they had together with their “Papa”. His sister, Diane, and his niece (Robyn) and nephew (Benjamin) also had a special place in his heart. His love for his family was so evident in his smile and hugs and laughter. Most importantly, Thomas clung to his faith in Jesus Christ, and he made that known to his family in some of his last hours. He was ready to meet his Savior. A Celebration of Life will be held at the Belk Funeral Home in Darlington, SC on Saturday, April 20th. The family will receive visitors beginning at 1:00 p.m., with services beginning at 2:00 p.m. The address is 229 W Broad Street, Darlington, SC 29532.
