Ruth (Houser) Matthews

 

Ruth “Ruthie” Houser Matthews, age 89, widow of Dr. Josiah “Joe” Matthews, passed away on Sunday, April 7, 2024. A funeral service will be held in Darlington Presbyterian Church on Tuesday, April 9, 2024 at 11:00am. The family will receive friends from 5:00 until 7:00 on Monday at the home of Mark and Nancy Matthews, 103 Brittan Road in Darlington.

 

She was born in Orangeburg, SC on September 16, 1934.. Mrs. Matthews graduated from the University of South Carolina School of Medicine as a Registered Nurse. She worked alongside her husband in the healthcare profession. Ruthie was a devoted Christian, and was known to be a prayer warrior. She served her Lord through her faithfulness and service at Darlington Presbyterian Church, where she served in many ways, including as a deacon, an elder , and circle leader.

 

She is survived by five children; Benjamin Rushton Matthews (Dotti) of Florence, SC, Dr. Josiah Simpson Matthews, IV (Lisa) of Albany, GA, Warren Mark Matthews, Sr. (Nancy) of Darlington, SC, Brenda Matthews Myers (Joe) of Atlanta, GA, Martha “Molly” Elizabeth Matthews (Leah) of Davidson, NC. Her fifteen grandchildren, eighteen great-grandchildren, nieces, nephew, cousins.
