Richard Rocky Shumake, age 68 died Thursday, June 10, 2021. A memorial service will be held 2:00 p.m. Monday, June 14th at New Beginnings Church, 1517 E. Bobo Newsome Hwy. Hartsville, SC 29550.
Born on October 10, 1952, Rocky was the son of the late Oliver Bryant and Fannie Mae Kelly Shumake. He was a veteran of the U.S. Air Force during the Vietnam War. He was based in Ellsworth Air Base in Rapid City, South Dakota; and was deployed to Tan Son Nhut Air Force Base in Saigon, South Vietnam. After his military service he worked as a parts distributer for Darlington Auto Parts.
Rocky was devoted to his family and was the family historian. He was known as a great storyteller and jokester. There was always laughter and joy in his presence. He loved children, small animals, fishing, and horses. Children and animals were drawn to him.
Surviving are his wife, Cindy Britt Shumake; step-son, John (Victoria) Harrington; step-daughters, Samantha Harrington and Holly (Tim) Teel, all of Darlington; seven grandchildren, two great-grandchildren; and a granddaughter that he raised, Melody Teel. Also surviving are his sisters, Carolyn (Harry) Kinard of Lancaster and Olivia McDonald Baird of Hartsville; brother, Guy (Cynthia) McDonald of Hartsville; and a special niece, Beth (Allen) Parr of Hartsville.
He was preceded in death by his two sisters, Eva Mae Sedlacek and Elizabeth Clark; and a special nephew, Brandon Alexander, Sr.
