Miriam Campbell Obituary

Miriam Peavey Campbell, 78, of Darlington, SC, entered into eternal rest on May 25, 2021. A celebration memorial service will be held 11:00 a.m. Thursday, May 27th, at Belk Funeral Home Chapel in Darlington. The Rev. Renny Johnson, Rev. Tim Coker, and Rev. Dr. Brian Sherwood will be officiating the service. Visitation will be held immediately after the service. A private burial will be held for family members.

Miriam was preceded in death by her husband, Phillip Campbell, and her parents, LeRoy and Allie Peavey, and by a brother, Roy Peavey, all of Darlington. Miriam was a caring wife, mother, grandmother, sister, and friend to many. She will be greatly missed by all who knew her.

She is survived by three children, Dean (Kay) Campbell of Johnston, SC; Damon Campbell, and Dodee (Bill) Clontz, both of Darlington, SC; grandson, Brodee Clontz of Darlington; twin brother Marion (Jo) Peavey of Virginia; and nieces and nephews whom she loved, including Ginny (Dee) Peavey and Alex (Sarah) Peavey, both of Virginia. The family is also thankful to the workers of Comfort Keepers who did more than their share to take care of her. In addition, while she only stayed a short time at Bethea Baptist Retirement Community, the family is thankful for all who took care of her.

She was a lifetime member of First Baptist Church of Darlington.

Miriam was a 1960 graduate of St. John’s High School, Darlington. She made many life-long friends during high school, but picked up many other devoted friends throughout her life. She enjoyed reaching out to her friends and family and had a giving heart for her community. Only her health slowed her down in her later years.

After high school, she worked at several jobs, including being employed at Dixie Cup; the Darlington County School District; Wilson Clinic and Hospital, where she worked 13 years as the Administrator’s Secretary; and Central Baptist Church Secretary for 14 years until she retired. In retirement, she cared for her Grandson, Brodee, who she always said she “loved to the moon and back.”

Miriam was very active in the community for her entire life. She was dedicated to the Darlington Jaycee-ettes, holding many offices in the Darlington chapter, including President in the late 1960s. In the 1970s, she was the Director of the Little Miss Darlington Pageant. Throughout the 1970s, 1980s, and 1990s, she was involved with the Miss Darlington Scholarship Pageant and the Miss Southern 500 Scholarship Pageant. In the 1990s, she served as the Parents Committee Chair for the Miss South Carolina Scholarship Pageant. She was active in the Darlington Pilot Club for decades and was also a Past President of the Darlington Lions Club. From 2002-2013, she was the Chair of the Darlington Sweet Potato Festival. In 2008, she was recognized as the Woman of the Year by the Greater Darlington Chamber of Commerce.
