Maybelle Hutchinson Clanton

Maybelle Hutchinson Clanton, age 96, passed away on Tuesday July 25, 2023. Graveside services for Mrs. Clanton will be held at 11am on Saturday, July 29, 2023, in Grove Hill Cemetery in Darlington, South Carolina. Maybelle Hutchinson Clanton was born August 22, 1926, in Rocky Mount, North Carolina, the daughter of Maybelle Williamson Hutchinson and James Allen Hutchinson, Sr. She grew up in Darlington and attended the public schools of Darlington, graduating in 1943 from St. John’s High School. She began her work career at a “dime” store on the Public Square in Darlington and then joined Mr. James C. Clanton, Sr. in the founding years of Clanton's Auto Auction. 

She worked her entire career with Clanton's Auto Auction. Her first husband was the late Herbert Dennis “Mac” McCoy, a well-known and respected Darlington businessman. Her second husband, Laurie H. Clanton, who died in the year 2000, was the fourth child of J.C. Clanton, Sr.

Surviving Maybelle are a son, Edward D. (Eddie) McCoy, Sr. of Darlington; a stepson, Laurie Clanton, Jr. of Florence; grandson, Edward D. McCoy, Jr. of San Clemente, California; great-granddaughter, Hailey Brooke McCoy of Florence; sisters Mary Lee Hutchinson Andrews of Darlington and Carrie Hutchinson Kirby (Mike) of Brevard, North Carolina; brother James Allen Hutchinson, Jr. (Phyllis) of Grandy, North Carolina; a number of nieces and nephews and great-great nieces and nephews; cousins and special friends, Billie Ann Davis Williams, and Sara Davis Jones-Chandler. Maybelle was also predeceased by sisters, Geneva (Bea) O’Neal-Foster and Elizabeth McNeese-King, and brothers, George Thomas Hutchinson and Bennie Elliott Hutchinson.
