Marie (Lane) Ross

Marie Lane Ross, age 85, passed away peacefully on October 3rd, 2023.  A funeral service will be held on Sunday, October 8th at Black Creek Baptist Church in Dovesville at 2:00pm.  A private family burial will take place on Monday, October 9th at Elmwood Cemetery in Columbia.

Born on December 7th, 1937, to the late Rembert J. and Henrietta Meggs Lane, Marie was married to the late John R. “Jack” Ross for 35 years and together they owned Ross Flying Service.  After many years of service, she retired from the United States Department of Agriculture and later Telamon Corporation.  

Marie had a passion for gardening, which was evident through the appearance of her beautifully landscaped yard which featured a variety of her favorite camellias, daylilies, and roses.  She was once interviewed and published in the local newspaper for her award winning yard. 

Mrs. Ross was actively involved in the community, volunteering and serving as a board member for The Lord Cares, member and past president of the Darlington Garden Club, member and past president of both the South Carolina and National Women’s Aerial Agriculture Association.  She was a long time member of Black Creek Baptist Church where she served in many capacities, and especially delighted in teaching the College and Career Sunday school class.  She also enjoyed playing bridge and was a member of several local bridge clubs. 

Marie is survived by her four siblings, Janet (John) Walkup of Columbia, Peggy (Carl) Hardee of Marion, Jim Lane of West Columbia, and Anna (Howard “Bo”) Boatwright of Marion; step-grandchild, Adam Ross of Little Mountain; four nieces, Allison Thames, Amy (Steven) Becker, Tyson Boatwright, and Ryan (Jim) McCormick; two great nephews, Heath Capps and Shawn Capps; two great nieces, Madison Becker and Campbell McCormick; and also her petite canine companion Pixie. 

In addition to her parents, Marie is preceded in death by her husband, Jack Ross and a step-son John R. Ross, Jr.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be given to Black Creek Baptist Church, 137 Mont Clare Road, Darlington, or McLeod Hospice House of Florence.
