At the age of 82, Jerry Carter went to be with his Heavenly Father on January 27, 2023. Born in Holly Hill, SC on March 12, 1940, he was the son of the late Rosa Mae Carter and fostered son of his late special aunt Ruby Carter Kempson and late Roland Edgar ‘Buck’ Kempson. He was a faithful, loving, caring and devoted husband, father, and grandfather, affectionately called Andad by his beloved grandchildren. He was a faithful member of Fair Hope Church in Lamar, SC. He is loved and cherished by many and will be greatly missed.
Mr. Carter attended the University of SC and Clemson College and served honorably in the US Army. He enjoyed a 39-year career working for the railroad, starting with the Atlantic Coast Line in 1963, and retiring as a Conductor for CSX Railroad in 2002. Mr. Carter was a lifelong learner with special interests that included travel, carpentry, and sporting events. He formed lasting friendships throughout his life and was highly respected within the railroad, church, and broader community.
Mr. Carter is survived by his beloved wife of 60 years, Maidelene Carter; sons, Jerry Chance (Kimberly) Carter of Livermore, CA, and Jerry Lance Carter of West Columbia, SC; grandchildren Kyndal Nicole Carter, Kaylan Tyler Carter, and Chance Kallen Carter of Livermore, CA; sister-in-law, Mildred Edna Von Eschen of West Columbia, SC; nephews, James ‘Jamie’ Charles Knight and Jeffrey Lance (Crystal) Knight of West Columbia, SC, and Pelion, SC, respectively; and fraternal friend, O. O. ‘Sonny’ Mack of Lake City, SC.
Belk Funeral Home will be assisting the family during this difficult time. Visitation will be held on Monday, January 30, 2023, from 6:00 pm to 7:30 pm at the Belk Funeral Home Lamar Chapel (217 W. Main St, Lamar, SC, 29069). A graveside service will be held on Tuesday, January 31, 2023, at 1:00 pm at the Fair Hope Church Cemetery (1116 East Lynches River Rd, Lamar, SC, 29069).
The family would like to thank the doctors and nurses of Regency Hospice (Florence, SC) and the MUSC Health Florence Medical Intensive Care Unit (MICU), for the loving care provided to Mr. Carter and his family.
