Gordon Brown Obituary

Samuel Gordon Brown, Jr., a southern gentleman who devoted his life to his Lord, Church, and community passed away at the age of 97 on Wednesday, February 14, 2024, at McLeod Hospice House. A visitation will be held in Belk Funeral Home Lamar on Saturday, February 17th from the times of 5:00pm until 7:00pm. A funeral service will be held Sunday, February 18th at 2:00pm in the Lamar United Methodist Church, with interment following the service in Lamar Cemetery.

Gordon was born in Georgetown County on July 24, 1926, son of the late Samuel Gordon Brown, Sr. and Helen Powers Brown. After Gordon graduated High School, he went on to serve his Country during WWII in the U.S. Army as a Paratrooper in the 82nd Airborne. Gordon started his profession as a pharmacist in Lamar in 1958 as the owner of Parrott’s Drug Store then becoming Brown’s Drug Store then moving his business to Piggly Wiggly Pharmacy. He kept an active pharmacy license until the age of 90. Gordon was a member of the American Legion for 70 years; he was an active member of Lamar Civitans, Chairman of Darlington County Library Board, Salvation Army, Darlington Free Medical Clinic and as Darlington County Commissioner. Gordon was a faithful member of Lamar United Methodist Church and served his church in many capacities, including serving as a member of the Board of Trustees for the United Methodist Church District.

Gordon is survived by his wife, Floy Rogers Watford Brown of Lamar, his children, Wayne (Kelly) Brown of Florence and Nancy (Marcial) Briggs of Columbia, his grandchildren, Parker Brown, Jeffrey (Martha) Briggs, Brandon (Amy) Briggs, Barbara Briggs, great grandchildren, Eloise Briggs and Lucas Briggs, step-children, Cleve (Beth), Bart (Carla), and Matt (Nikki) Watford, step-grandchildren, Brittney (Justin), Cassie (Luke), Lacy (Matt), Jace, Ella, Shane (Lauren), Adyn, Jennifer (James), Carren, and Sarah (Coy), step great-grandchildren, Jay, Mac, Hayes, Baines, Campbell, John, Bethannie, Jase, Carrie Mac, Ben, Cameron, Hart, Mason and Jackson.  He is also survived by his brother, Gene Brown of Surfside Beach.

In addition to his parents, Gordon is preceded in death by his first wife, Barbara Gray Brown and his step-daughters, Kaye and Susan.
