Burl D. Bagwell graduated to Heaven on Friday, November 20, 2021 with a “job well done. “ His whole life could be wrapped up in the verse “Not my will, but Thine.”
Born on February 17, 1929 to Roy and Esther Ora Bagwell, he was the youngest of four children. From a very young age he decided to follow the Lord, fully trusting in Him. He remembered singing the song “I’ll go where you want me to go, dear Lord” as a child and he fulfilled those lyrics with his life.
After graduating from Oklahoma Baptist University he traveled with an evangelist leading the music before he married his college sweetheart.
He attended The Southern Baptist Theological Seminary in Louisville, KY, Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary in Fort Worth, TX and Oral Roberts University in Tulsa OK graduating with a Masters degree in Theology.
His heart’s desire was to preach yet he taught others to preach and teach in more than one Bible college. His students went all over the world bringing the good news of the gospel of Jesus Christ to many nations. After his teaching career was completed, he traveled to visit and encourage and assist those students. He was a missionary to all until finally retiring at the full age of eighty years.
He was a wonderful husband, loving father and faithful friend.
Burl is survived by his precious wife Peggy Bagwell and his children: Joy (Jonathan) Books, Susan (Don) Carr, Debra (Jim) Guthrie, Paul (Kathy) Bagwell, DeNiece (Eddie) Jackson, Ronnie Glock, Dr. Pablo (Maria) McKeown and Martha (Sergio) Parra; and a blessed bunch of grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his first wife Roberta Louise Viar Bagwell, his sisters Marie Ramsey, Floy Rhea Jones, his brother Donald Bagwell, and his son Larry Glock.
A funeral service will be held 11:00 a.m. Tuesday, November 23rd in the chapel at Belk Funeral Home. Burial will be private and the family will remain in the funeral home to receive friends following the service.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society, www.cancer.org; or to Darlington First Church of God, 620 N. Main St. Darlington, SC 29532.
