William Lucas "Luke" Griggs

William Lucas "Luke" Griggs, age 82, passed away on Wednesday morning surrounded by his family at McLeod Hospice House. A visitation for Mr. Griggs will be held in Belk Funeral Home on Thursday, August 15th from the time of 6:00pm until 8:00pm. A funeral service will take place in First Baptist Church on Friday, August 16th at 11:00am, with burial immediately following in Darlington Memory Gardens.

Luke was born on March 16, 1942, in Hartsville, he is the son of the late Letha Griggs Barnhill. He then served his country in the United States Army. Mr. Griggs worked for Sonoco for over 40 years as a mechanic and genuinely enjoyed his time working there. Even though he spent 40 years with Sonoco, Luke's true passion was cattle farming. He loved the cattle he raised on his farm which was named, Rufshod Farm. He was a long-time member of First Baptist Church in Darlington where he had served as a deacon.

Surviving Luke is his wife of 46 years, Martha Jordan Griggs, children, Eileen (David) Anderson of Myrtle Beach, Beth (Cliff) Jones of Hartsville, Amanda (Brad) Jones of Florence, grandchildren, Ashley Anderson, Adrian Anderson, Kira (Caleb) Johnson, Noah Jones, Kendall Jones, Addison Jones. He is also survived by his sisters, Lynn Barnhill of Hartsville, and Hope Howle of Hartsville.

In Addition to his mother, Luke is preceded in death by his stepfather, Cole L. Barnhill.

The family would like to give special thanks to the Retreat at Carolina Bay and the McLeod Hospice House for the wonderful care and compassion they provided during a time like this.
