Thelma Garrett Self

Thelma Garrett Self, 102, of Lamar, South Carolina, passed away peacefully on January 6, 2025.

Funeral Services will be held Saturday January 11th at Lamar United Methodist Church at 11 am.  The family will receive visitors following the funeral service.  Burial will be private at a later time due to inclement weather conditions.

She was born on July 12, 1922, in Mars Bluff, South Carolina, to James Edward Garrett and Sarah Scaff Garrett.

Thelma was married to Charles Edward Self, with whom she shared many happy years of marriage. Together, they raised a family that was the center of her life. She worked in the Darlington Cotton Mill until their closure, then as an inspector at the Nytronics Plant for many years and was a valued member of the community.

A faithful member of Lamar United Methodist Church, Thelma found joy and solace in attending her Fellowship Sunday School Class. Her strong faith and unwavering commitment to her family were the foundation of her life, and she was loved by all who knew her.

She is survived by her daughters Betty (Don) Watford of Lamar and Bobbie (Tony) Smith of Lexington. Thelma is also survived by her grandchildren: Sonia Licardo of Fayetteville, North Carolina, Scott Self from Stoneville, North Carolina, Donnie (Shawn) Watford of Myrtle Beach, Cindy Smith Reynolds of Lexington, and Kevin Smith of Lexington. Also daughter-in-law Violet Self Haywood In addition, she leaves behind eight great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren, all of whom were a great joy to her.

Thelma was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Charles, her son Laverne Self, and her siblings James "Son" Garrett, Juanita Bailey, Daisy Ward, Dot Hyatt, and Jay Garrett.

Her family extends their heartfelt gratitude for the outpouring of love and support during this time.

Thelma's legacy of kindness, faith, and love will forever be cherished by her family and friends. May she rest in peace.
