Mrs. Sylvia Lewis Carter died peacefully Thursday, September 26, 2024, after a brief illness. Sylvia was born in Jasper, Florida, May 17, 1937. She was the daughter of Horace Lewis and Mary Frances Corbett Lewis.
Sylvia graduated from Jasper high school and attended the University of Alabama, Brenau College where she pledged Delta Delta Delta, Alpha Epsilon Chapter, and Florida State University. Sylvia retired from the Darlington County School District where she was a teaching assistant. She loved working with the students and positively impacted many lives.
Sylvia was a woman of strong faith and always turned to the Lord for her strength. She loved her church and her church family. She was dedicated to Lamar United Methodist Church where she served in many leadership positions…. Sunday School Teacher, Board of Trustees, Pastor/ Parish Committee, Altar Guild, and Chairperson for the Worship Committee. She was, also, a member of the Fellowship Sunday School Class and the Bessie Jeffords Circle.
Sylvia had many interest. She was an avid reader and supporter of the Friends of the Lamar Library. She adored flowers and plants spending much of her time working in her yard. Sylvia was often called on by her friends and church to arrange flowers for a special event. She delighted in doing so. She enjoyed beach trips with friends and shopping for just the right pair of shoes.
Above all else, Sylvia adored her family. She is survived by two sons, Mark Lewis Carter (Vanessa) of Patrick and Scott Corbett Carter (Julie Ann) of Lamar . The title Sylvia most enjoyed was "Granny" to her nine grandchildren: Megan, Matthew, Mara, Mark Jr., and Molly Carter, Kirsten and Trent Mann, and Brody and Olivia Carter and three great- grand children Layla, Weston and Keagan. She is also survived by her brother Gerry Lewis (Margaret) and many nieces and nephews.
Sylvia was preceded in death by her beloved husband Walter Earl Carter, Jr. (Bud) and beloved daughter, Carla Carter Mann.
A grave side service will be held in Lamar Memorial Cemetery on September 30, 2024 at 11:00 am. The family will greet friends following the service.
