On February 3, 2026, beloved wife and mother Sherry “Skip” Dunseath Welch of Darlington, SC passed away suddenly and unexpectedly while visiting Davis, West Virginia with her husband James E. (Jim) Welch, also of Darlington, SC, by her side. She was born in Key West, FL to the late Dr. and Mrs. William J.R. Dunseath and raised in Baltimore, MD. She was a graduate of Notre Dame College of Baltimore, MD. Her early career was as an art teacher in the Baltimore, MD and Portsmouth, VA schools. She also worked as a park ranger and ropes course instructor at North West River Park in Chesapeake, VA. Skip ultimately went on to pursue a 22 year career as a police officer with Portsmouth Police Department in Portsmouth, VA. Skip is survived by her loving husband and best friend of over 40 years, James E. Welch of Darlington, SC, her devoted daughter Katherine (Neil) Strieff of Wake Forest, NC, brother Dr. W.J. Ross (Jennifer) Dunseath, Jr. of Charlottesville, VA, sister Suzanne (John) Dunseath Bohn of Chanhassen, MN, nephews Scott Bohn, John Bohn and James Bohn, all of whom she was so proud of, aunt Elinor (William, deceased) Usher of Nashville, TN, cousin Betsey Usher of Nashville, TN and multiple other relatives, all of whom she was so very fond of. Skip was an active and dedicated parishioner of St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Darlington, SC. She also participated in various educational activities at St. Anthony’s Catholic Church in Florence, SC. She was very passionate with her faith and encouraged others to embrace their faith in God, as well. She is described by her family and friends as a pillar of strength, intelligent, kind, fun and lively, and most generous, especially with St. Jude Children's Research Hospital. She also adored her dogs and had a tremendous love of animals. The family wishes to express their deepest gratitude to Don and Pauline Hundley and Kathy Williams, all of Chesapeake, VA. They were with Jim when Skip passed and were of tremendous comfort and support. A memorial service is being held for Skip at St. Anthony's Catholic Church in Florence, SC on Monday, February 16th at 11:00am. A private burial will be held in Baltimore, MD at a later time.
