Colonel Samuel J. Grant Jr., US ARMY-RET., 95, passed away Sunday, September 7th, 2025. A Graveside funeral service will take place on Tuesday, September 9, 2025, at 3pm, at Mt. Hope Cemetery in Florence, SC.
Born in McColl, SC, Sam's family moved to Darlington from McColl when he was three. He graduated from St. John's High School and from Clemson, then a military college, in 1952 with a degree in Civil Engineering as a Distinguished military graduate. He was commissioned from Clemson as a second lieutenant of Artillery in the Army. One of his fondest memories of Clemson was having commanded Company B-2, which was awarded "Best-Drill Company" in the Corps of Cadets his senior year. He served his country in the Darlington SCNG for five years and for 24 years in the Army with stateside tours in Virginia, Texas, Oklahoma, North Carolina, and the Pentagon. Overseas tours included Taiwan, Germany, and Vietnam. Sam always spoke proudly of his military service. After retiring from the Army, he was employed as an environmental engineer with SCDHEC in Columbia, retiring in 1992.
Sam was raised a Methodist and served his church in many capacities during his lifetime. Next to his love for God and his family, he loved sharing the Gospel of Jesus Christ, whether in church wile teaching youth and adult Sunday Schools, in jails and prisons throughout South Carolina, or wherever the opportunity existed. He was a devoted volunteer and bible teacher for Prison Fellowship Ministries since 1980, ministering to thousands of inmates during this time, many of whom became good friends.
Surviving is his wife, Nora, whom he knew as the true love and the most amazing person of his life; his son Glen David Grant of Viginia, his daughters: Karen Ann Holm of Virginia, Laura Jean Grant of Florida, and Linda Lee Aragon (Johnnie) of Virginia. His two stepdaughters Tere' (Lee) Baxley and Tiffni Baxley of South Carolina. In addition, grandchildren; Jimmy Holm, Cameron, Cali, and Cecilia Aragon; Benjamin Staton; Kirsten Baxley, and Leighton (Anthony) Pohorilak, great grandchildren: Ezra, Maezie, and Lucy Maddox.
Preceding him in death are his siblings: Nellie Mae Bell, Carl Edward Grant, Elise Christine Grant, Betty Frances Harper, and Rosa Faye Dennis.
Belk Funeral Home will be serving the family. The family would like to recognize McLeod Hospice for their wonderful treatment of Sam.
