Raymond E. Harris, age 87, passed away Wednesday, May 23, 2018 in McLeod Hospital in Florence, South Carolina. A memorial service will be held 10:00 a.m. Thursday, May 31, 2018 at St. Matthew's Unison Freewill Baptist Church, 400 Dixwell Ave. New Haven, CT 06511.
Born January 31, 1931 in New Haven, Connecticut, Raymond is the son of the late Ernest James Harris and Rachel Hamilton Harris. He worked as a Sherriff's Deputy in New Haven County for many years, and worked for Amtrak in New Haven for 37 years. After moving to Society Hill, South Carolina, he was involved in the community. Raymond enjoyed collecting elephant figurines, and reading the Bible every day. He loved music, especially jazz, and Diana Ross was his favorite.
Surviving are his children, Glennie Harris-Roberts (Martin), Berthinia Harris McClendon (Anthony), Jimmie Harris, Qadry Harris, all of Connecticut, and Leonard Harris of Florence, South Carolina. Also surviving are six grandchildren, and one great-grandchild. He was preceded in death by his sister, Ellen Tutt, and his brother, William Harris.
