A private burial will be held for family members. Phillip was preceded in death by his parents, Leon and Mamie Brand Campbell, and by brothers James, Robert, Dan, and Leon "Sonny" Campbell, and one sister, Marie Whittle. Phillip also said he was preceded in death by many friends who he said he looked forward to seeing again after keeping their memory alive since their passing. He is survived by his wife, Miriam Peavey Campbell; three children, Dean (Kay) Campbell, Damon Campbell, and Dodee (Bill) Clontz; Papa's favorite grandson, Brodee Clontz; a sister, Thelma Parnell; two brothers, Ricky Campbell and Hazel (Jean) Campbell; sisters-in-law Dorothy Campbell and Kathleen Campbell; brother-in-law Marion (Jo) Peavey; and numerous nieces and nephews whom he loved. Phillip was a 1957 graduate of St. John's High School, Darlington, where he enjoyed playing football, among other sports. He made many life-long friends during high school, but picked up many other devoted friends throughout his life. During and after high school, he worked as a DJ at WDAR Radio, and also employed at Clanton's Auto Sales and Perfection American for years. He also worked for many years with his brother, Dan, in his trucking businesses Honey Transport and Bestway Refrigerated Services, and with the Beasley family at Carolina Bank in Darlington, where he retired. He was very active in the community for his entire life. He was dedicated to the Darlington Jaycees, holding virtually every office in the local chapter. For two years, he was State Chairman of Mental Health/Mental Retardation. While he won numerous awards and recognitions during this time, he was proudest to the first Darlington Jaycee selected as a JCI Senator, the highest recognition bestowed by the Internal Organization. Phillip also served on the Board of Directors for the Miss South Carolina Scholarship Pageant for over 30 years. He was also the long-time Director/Producer of the Miss Southern 500 Pageant. In addition, he served on the Darlington County Election Commission and SC Department of Social Services Board for several years. Phillip was also active in politics, one of his favorite pastimes. He was involved in local and state campaigns, including David Beasley's first campaign for the SC House. During his life, he enjoyed meeting with friends and family during breakfast at local restaurants, holding court with them, and dispensing wisdom and special quotes that everyone enjoyed. He found great pleasure and joy in being able to bring some smiles and laughter into everyone's life. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the McLeod Hospice House, PO Box 100551 Florence, SC 29502.
