Obituary

It is with deep sorrow that we announce the passing of Rev. Melvin “Mel” Wilber Flail Jr., beloved husband, father, grandfather and devoted minister. Mel passed away on Wednesday, April 15, 2026, at the age of 77. A visitation is being held on Sunday, April 19th, 2026 from 3:00 to 4:30pm at Belk Funeral Home of Lamar. His funeral service will follow at 5:00pm in the Lamar United Methodist Church. A private burial will take place at a later date. The family will also receive friends at the home, 3104 Stillwater Lane, Florence. Mel was born on September 9, 1948, in Savannah, Georgia to the late “Joe” Melvin W. Flail, Sr. and Virginia Geiger Flail. Mel was a man of faith and conviction, dedicating his life to the ministry and uplifting countless individuals with his compassionate spirit, profound wisdom and his sense of humor . He obtained a Master of Divinity Degree and served faithfully as a minister, guiding his congregations and community with unwavering commitment and love. He served churches in Florida, Virginia, Alabama, and South Carolina. He retired from Lamar United Methodist Church after 14 years of dedicated leadership as their pastor and was bestowed the honor of Pastor Emeritus. Mel is survived by his cherished wife, Joan Stauffer Flail; his two daughters, Lisa (Brad) Sansbury and Thea White. His six beloved grandchildren: Alexis Floyd (Andrew) Lee, Mariah Godbold, Hannah Floyd, Cameron White, Jacob Floyd, and Elizabeth White. He is also survived by his brother, Mike Flail of Valdosta, GA. He was preceded in death by his parents and his son-in-law, Johnny Floyd. He leaves behind a legacy of love and faith that will forever resonate in the hearts of all he touched throughout his ministry. All ministers are asked to sit together as honorary pallbearers at his service. Memorials may be made to Lamar United Methodist Church at P.O.BOX 555 Lamar, SC 29069.
