Mary 'Baby Sister' Baird

July 9, 1925 — January 27, 2017

Mary 'Baby Sister' Gandy Baird, age 91, passed away Friday, January 27, 2017. A graveside service will be held 11:00am Wednesday, February 1, 2017 in Black Creek Cemetery, with a visitation following at Black Creek Baptist Church, directed by Belk Funeral Home. Born July 9, 1925, 'Baby Sister' is the daughter of the late Simmons Abel Gandy, Sr. and Nelle Livingston Gandy. She taught school for over 40 years in Aiken and Darlington Counties. She encouraged everyone to get educations, worked diligently to teach illiterate adults to read, and taught numerous community children how to swim, which were a few of her many passions. 'Baby Sister' was always willing to help others in her community. She was a life-long member of Black Creek Baptist Church and held positions there, such as Superintendent of Children's Services and WMU Director. Surviving are her son, Edward Williams (Edwina) Baird, Jr of Darlington; her daughter, May L. (Joe Heffernan) Baird of Sumter; her grandchildren, Brice L. Baird, Ainslee J. Heffernan of Sumter, A.W. Tait Heffernan of Sumter; and her sister-in-law, Betty Gail Gandy. She was preceded in death by her husband, Edward Williams 'E.W.' Baird; two brothers, Benjamin 'Benji' Franklin Gandy and Simmons Abel Gandy, Jr.; her sister, Joyce Gandy Garrison. In lieu of flowers, memorials are suggested to: Connie Maxwell Children's Home (PO Box1178, Greenwood, SC 29648) or Black Creek Baptist Church (137 Mont Clare Rd, Darlington, SC 29540).
