Mary McFadden Clanton of Darlington died on Tuesday, April 9, 2019. Funeral services will be held on Friday, April 12, 2019 at 3:00 PM at Darlington Presbyterian Church. Burial will follow in Grove Hill Cemetery directed by Belk Funeral Home. There will be a visitation on Thursday, April 11 from 6:00-8:00 PM at Belk Funeral Home, and other times at the home, 104 Oakview Dr. Darlington, SC 29532.
Born in Florence, South Carolina, Mary was the daughter of the late Clyde Stuckey and Gladys J. Garner McFadden. She lived in Darlington all of her life. She was a graduate of St. John's High School and Columbia College. Mary and her husband Ray, along with her twin sister Marian and her husband Bill Harper, were married in a double wedding ceremony on December 28, 1950 at Trinity United Methodist Church. For 70 years, Mary was an active member of Darlington Presbyterian Church in the Covenant Sunday School Class and the morning circle. She was a long-time member of Jeannyne Greer's "Precept Bible Ministries" and later Betsy Bird's "Just for Women Bible Study Ministries".
Mary was enthusiastic and welcoming, always ready with a smile and an encouraging word of support for everyone. She lived well, laughed often, and loved much! Mary enjoyed traveling, gardening and spending time with her twin sister Marian.
Mary is lovingly remembered by her sons Richard McFadden Clanton (Lynn) and Robert Dean Clanton (Mary Beth); five grandchildren Mary Carolyn Longbrake (Kyle), William Richard Clanton, Thomas Ray Clanton (Kayla), Anna James Clanton, and Rosalyn McFadden Clanton; three great-grandchildren Colton, Nathan and Jillian Longbrake; and nieces Holly Foley (Steve) and Mze Wilkins (Dick).
Mary was preceded in death by her devoted husband of 66 years, Ray McIver Clanton, a son, Ray McIver Clanton, Jr., her twin sister, Marian McFadden Harper, her brother, Clyde Stuckey McFadden and her sister, Margaret Garner McFadden.
The family would like to express their gratitude to Sylvia Johnson who was Mary's devoted and loving main caretaker for several years. Her kindness and attentive care will not be forgotten. The family would also like to thank all the caretakers who looked after Mary including Brenda Fleming, Michelle Johnson, and Angie Dixon.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be made to either the Susan Johnson Memorial Fund or the Endowment Fund, both at Darlington Presbyterian Church, 311 Pearl Street, Darlington, SC 29532.
