Mary Jean (Blackman) Hatchell

Mary Jean Blackman Hatchell, age 82, passed away on Wednesday, December 14, 2022. The family will receive friends on Thursday, December 22 from 2:00pm until 3:00pm in Belk Funeral Home. A funeral service will follow the visitation in the chapel of Belk Funeral Home at 3:00pm.

Jean was born in Darlington County on September 26, 1940. She is the daughter of the late Harvie C. Blackman and Mary Magdalene Gunnells Blackman. She was a graduate of St. John's High School in the class of 1958, attended the Carolina College of Commerce in Florence and was a member of the Darlington Presbyterian Church. She was married in 1961 at Fort Benning, Georgia to Lt.  Albert E. Hatchell, Jr. whom she affectionately called "Elvin". She was a loving and devoted wife and homemaker raising three daughters while moving around the world as a military wife. She fondly reminisced about her travels overseas before returning to Darlington to live. She enjoyed talking to friends and neighbors, especially while having a good cup of coffee. She also loved collecting teddy bears, decorating for the holidays and spending time with her many grand dogs over the years. She loved spending time with her family most of all. In raising three daughters, she was more than just a 'mother' but was a kind and loving 'mom'.

Jean will be remembered as a devoted wife, loving mother and kind friend.

Jean is survived by her three daughters, Christa Hatchell of Florence, Wyndee (Kevin) Brown, and Holly Lynn (Robbie Blackman) Hatchell and her grand dog, Raven.

In addition to her parents, she is preceded in death by her husband, Lt. Col. Albert E. "Chuck" Hatchell, Jr.
