Marion Coggeshall Rogers Coxe died at the McLeod Hospice House in Florence, on Jan. 25, 2016, after a brief illness. Her family was by her side. Born March 7, 1954, she was the daughter of Jessie Williamson Coggeshall and Frank Esby Rogers, Jr., of Darlington, South Carolina. On February 21, 1987, she married Richard Badham Coxe, also of Darlington.
Marion attended St. John's High School, graduated from James F. Byrnes Academy, and continued her education at Converse College where she graduated in 1976 with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Humanities. She was active in the campus life of her high schools and her college. After college, she followed her interest in politics engaging in The Ed Young Campaign. She worked in banking with C & S Bank for 10 years, in several capacities.
Participation in conservation and preservation efforts were very important in her life, as were community organizations. She was a member of the Williamson Park Committee, an enthusiastic supporter of the Pee Dee Land Trust, and was involved with the Guardian ad Litem program. She was a member of Over the Teacups Club (president and secretary on several occasions) and The National Society of The Colonial Dames in America, among others.
A lifelong member of St. Matthew's Church, Marion served the church in many ways: Vestry member, Sunday School teacher, youth group advisor, Junior Warden, Altar Guild, Buildings and Grounds Committee, Lay Reader, Food ministry, Women of the Church, Flower Guild, and Wedding Coordinator. One of her proudest accomplishments was when, as a member of the of the Episcopal Young Churchmen and the Diocesan Youth Commission, she was instrumental in getting the voting age for Diocesan youth lowered to 17 so that young people could participate more fully in the business of the Church.
She enjoyed reading (particularly mysteries and politics), gardening, generously sharing the beautiful house she and Ricky had built with as many family and friends as possible, and spending time with her grandchildren.
Marion is survived by her loving and much-loved husband Ricky, their beloved son Rogers, and her beloved step-children and their families: Elizabeth Coxe Hubbard, her husband Alan, and their 3 adorable and very lively boys, Hampton (who named her "Sugah"), Charlie, and Waits, of Hartsville, SC, and Richard Badham Coxe, Jr. and his wife Fairlie of Darien, Connecticut. She is also survived by her mother, Jessie Rogers, of Darlington, her sister Jessie Williamson Rogers Whitaker of Darlington, nieces Anne St. Clair Whitaker and Jane Rogers Field, of Austin, Texas, step-nephews Simon and Stephen Whitaker and their families, aunts Emmy Lou Coggeshall Donald of the Presbyterian Home and Marion Coggeshall Huggins of Pawley's Island and Darlington, three sisters-in-law and three brothers-in-law and their families, and numerous other relatives and friends. Marion was predeceased by her father Frank E. Rogers, Jr., her sister Mary Rogers Field, and her niece Marion Coggeshall Field McKenna.
The funeral service will be held at 2:00 p.m. on January 29th at St. Matthew's Church, Darlington, SC, followed by burial at the chapel of St. Thomas-in-the-Pines, Skufful Farm, Mont Clare, directed by Belk Funeral Home. The family will welcome friends at the Coxe home (Oak Ridge Farm, 531 Pocket Road), following services. Those unable to attend the burial are welcome at the house to await the family.
The family requests that memorials be sent to the "Marion R. Coxe Fund at ECCF" (Eastern Carolina Community Foundation), PO Box 1615, Florence, SC 29503. Marion was an enthusiastic member of the board of ECCF and a great believer in the good that it supports in Darlington and the surrounding areas.
