Obituary

Joyce Abbott Tyner went home to be with her Lord and Savior on December 20, 2025. In the Lord’s perfect timing , she now celebrates the birth of Christ free from pain & suffering. Joyce passed away peacefully at Piedmont Medical Center in Rock Hill, SC, surrounded by the love of her family.

Joyce was born on November 21, 1934, in Lydia, SC. and spent her entire life living in Darlington County. After graduating from St. John’s High School, she completed course work at Carolina College of Commerce and began her career in the office of Dixie Cup. Her strong work ethic and dedication were evident throughout her 43-year career there, until her retirement in 1996.

About all else, Joyce loved the Lord and her family with her whole heart. She lived a godly life that was evident to everyone who knew her. Even in her final days, while enduring pain and unable to attend worship services, she remained faithful in daily devotions and Bible study. Joyce consistently placed the Lord and her family ahead of any of her wants or needs. Joyce had a nurturing spirit that extended to everything she touched. Friends will fondly remember her love for flowers and her immaculately kept yard—including her special vigilance over pine cones that dared to fall onto her manicured lawn, which she meticulously gathered and burned. Just as passionately, she strived to help others. While raising her three children, she volunteered with the Boy Scouts and sought out opportunities to serve those around her. Even after long demanding work days, she always made time for her children, never once offering a complaint. Family gatherings were made special by Joyce’s thoughtful traditions. No holiday meal was complete without her perfectly canned pickles from her backyard garden and her homemade chocolate pies—both absolute essentials. Anyone who knew Joyce would agree that her generosity, compassion, and selflessness were among her most endearing qualities. Though her absence leaves a void that can never be filled, her family grieves with hope and rejoices in knowing that she suffers no more and now rests in the loving arms of her heavenly savior.

Joyce was preceded in death by her beloved parents, Randolph & LaWann Abbott, her special friend, Billy Shannon and the father of her children, Troy Tyner. Those left to cherish her memory include her three children, Randy (Judy) Tyner of Darlington, Regina (Les) Erving of Rock Hill, and Angela (Chris) Woollen, of Murrells Inlet. “Grams” also leaves behind her cherished grandsons, Sidney (Meagan) Tyner, Columbia; Spencer (Faith) Tyner, Darlington; Travis Erving of Rock Hill, Trent (Brooke) Erving of Rock Hill, Christopher Woollen of Murrells Inlet and Taylor (Alexa) Woollen of Westminster, Maryland. Her legacy of love, strength and compassion lives on through her great grandchildren, Parker and Kate, Lucas and Sarah, Harper and Harlow, and Ava, Callan and Hudson.

A Celebration of Life service will be held on Saturday, January 3, 2026 at 1:00 at Belk Funeral Home, Darlington, SC with visitation beginning at noon. Interment will follow immediately at Grove Hill Cemetery. In lieu of flowers the family requests that memorial contributions be made to Central Baptist Church Building Fund or a charity of one’s choice.
