It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Joe Dennis, Jr., who left us on February 16, 2026, at the age of 74. Friends and family will gather to celebrate Joe's life and share memories at his viewing at Belk Funeral Home of Darlington on Thursday, February 19, 2026, at 6:00 PM to 8:00PM. The funeral service will take place at Calvary Tabernacle Church on Bobo Newsom Hwy. on February 20, 2026, at 2:00 PM, followed by his burial at Grove Hill Cemetery.
Joe was born on April 18, 1951, to Joe Dennis, Sr. and Mildred Haggins Dennis in Darlington, South Carolina, where he spent his life surrounded by family and friends. He graduated from St. John’s High School in 1969. Then almost immediately he started working at Darlington Veneer Mill where he spent 48 years, until his retirement. Joe loved going to church and enjoyed singing there too. He was a real people person, always ready to help someone if he could and spending time with his friends. He leaves behind his brother Allen (Vivian) Dennis and a cherished uncle to his nephew, Timmy (Lisa) Davis, as well as his nieces, Samantha (Thomas) Howle-Rush and Kimberly Howle, Joe’s love for his family was a central part of his life, and he will be deeply missed by everyone who knew him.
Joe was preceded in death by his parents’ Joe Dennis, Sr. and Mildred Dennis, as well as his sisters Gladys Dennis and Marie Howle. The family would like to express their gratitude to English Meadows Hartsville Campus, Carolina Bay staff and everyone for all the warmth and care that was showered on Joe the last three months of his life.
Joe Dennis, Jr. was a man of quiet strength and genuine kindness, and his memory will live on in the hearts of those he touched. We're grateful for the time we had with him and will hold onto the memories forever.
