Joe L Byrd

Joe L. Byrd, age 78, died Tuesday, March 28th in a local hospital. A funeral service will be held at 11:00 on Saturday, April 1st in the chapel at Belk Funeral Home, with burial following in Darlington Memory Gardens. The family will receive friends from 6:00 until 8:00 pm on Friday evening at the funeral home. Born in Darlington on February 6, 1939, Joe is the son of the late Robert L. "R.L." Byrd and the late Madge Martin Byrd. Mr. Byrd worked as an electrician for NUCOR for over 25 years. He enjoyed spending time with his family and especially watching his great grandson play ball. Mr. Byrd was a Mason, a Shriner and past member of Temple Free Will Baptist Church. He is survived by his son, Larry Byrd of Darlington, two grandchildren, Maggie Wheeler and Daniel Byrd, a great-grandson, Michael Wheeler, a sister, Nell Gable, a brother, Douglas Martin (Martha) Byrd, Sr., all of Darlington, a special friend, Pinky Jordan and a special niece, Susie Williams. He was preceded in death by his wife Vivian B. Byrd, brothers: Frank, Fred and George Byrd; and his sisters, Gussie Moore and Kathryn Ward.
