Jessie Ruth Spivey Piacenza, age 88, passed away on Friday, September 20, 2024. A funeral service will be held at Bethea Baptist Church 157 Home Ave Darlington, SC on December 28, 2024 at 11am. Mrs. Piacenza will be laid to rest beside her beloved husband in Union Cemetery in North Stonington, CT following a graveside service on January, 4, 2025 at 11am.
Jessie was born in Lancaster, SC on November 20, 1935 to the late Henry Alton Spivey and Minnie Ila Thompson Spivey. Jessie moved from South Carolina to Connecticut, and graduated from Manchester College in Manchester, CT with an associate degree. While raising her family in North Stonington, CT she worked for General Dynamics Electric Boat and was the first female graduate of the welder's apprenticeship program. Here she was recognized as a Top Welder of her graduating class. Later Jessie went on to work for Pratt & Whitney as a technical writer and engineer for twenty-four years. After retiring she returned to South Carolina where she volunteered at Tidelands Georgetown Memorial Hospital in Georgetown, SC before moving to Bethea Retirement Community in Darlington, SC where she was an active member of Bethea Baptist Church for 8 years. Jessie will be remembered as a loving and caring wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother as well as a devoted friend and faithful member of the Baptist Church.
Surviving Jessie are her grandchildren, Jessica Friello, Alexis Capen, Rebekah Robinson and Colby Robinson of CT, Isaiah Robinson of KY, Taylor Robinson of NH, her step-grandchildren, Gray Capen of CT, Nathaniel Kargher of NC and Deborah Kargher of MA, and great-grandchildren, Jaxson Giovanni Friello, Rashid Ertoshi Capen, Rosalia Raperin Capen, Liam Zeller Robinson and Rhett Richard Robinson. She is also survived by her two daughters-in-law, Carole Capen-Kargher and Susan Robinson, and her step-son, Kenny Piacenza.
In addition to her parents, Jessie is preceded in death by her husband, Samuel H. Piacenza, and her children, William Zeller Robinson, David Altan Robinson, and Mark Alan Robinson.
