Jim Rhodes

James “Jim” Franklin Rhodes, 84, died August 13th, 2026. A funeral service will be held at Lamar First Baptist Church on Sunday, August 16th, at 3:30 pm. The family will receive friends in the church following the service. Jim will be buried at Lamar Memorial Cemetery.

Jim was born in Columbus County, NC, on August 1st, 1942, to the late Walter Rhodes and Hazel Jacobs Cartrette. Jim worked as a tugboat operator for a dredging company. He enjoyed playing his big collection of guitars, with a love for Elvis Presley. He was an avid reader, and he always enjoyed reading a good mystery book. He was a member of Lamar First Baptist Church where he served as a Deacon and ran the sound system.

He is survived by his wife; Carolyn Rhodes, stepchildren who were like children to him; Roy (Hope) Windham, Doris (Chuck) McDaniel, Carolyn (Lang) Howell, Ellen (the late Bob) Weaver, sister; Hilda Memory, grandchildren; Lindsey (Brad), Sean, Chandler, Brittany, Reagan, Carol, Scott, Leslie, Jody and 15 great grandchildren.

Jim was preceded in death by his parents; Walter Rhodes and Hazel Jacobs Cartrette, brother; Johnny Edwards Jacobs, and a wife; Shirley Rhodes, Daughter Kay Guthrie, son, Jr Watford.
