Fred William Watford, lovingly known as “Papa,” passed away on January 4, 2026, at the age of 82. A visitation will be held for him Wednesday, January 7th, 2026 at Belk Funeral Home in Lamar at 2 to 3pm, the funeral service will follow in the Chapel at 3 pm with internment immediately following at Lamar Memorial Cemetery.

Born on June 23, 1943, Fred lived a life defined by hard work, a deep love of the outdoors, and an even deeper love for his family. Fred dedicated 42 years of his life working at Sonoco, where he was known as a dependable, hardworking man who took pride in everything he did. His strong work ethic and commitment were evident not only in his career, but in all areas of his life. When Fred wasn’t working, you could almost always find him outside. He had a lifelong love for hunting and fishing and felt most at peace in nature. Farming was one of his greatest passions—you’d often see him tending his garden or riding the tractor, doing what he loved most.

Above all else, Fred loved his family. He loved deeply and generously, and he had a way of making everyone feel like family. His legacy will live on through the love he shared with those around him.

Fred leaves behind his wife Carolyn, sons Brian Watford of Bishopville and Rod (April) Watford, brother Melvin (Lynn) Watford of Lamar, and step-granddaughter Amanda (Audy)Tedder and Liam Tedder. Along with several great-grandchildren.

Preceding him in death are his first wife, Ann Parnell Watford, sons Todd Anthony Watford and Fred W. “Freddie” Watford, brother Thomas Leonard Watford and sister Diane Watford Amerson.

Fred was greeted by the presence of the Lord and is now rejoicing in Heaven. He will be deeply missed and forever remembered by all who knew and loved him.
