Lamar - Major Edwin M. Slaughter, Jr., husband of Martha Watford Slaughter, age 93, passed away Monday, December 14, 2015. Funeral service will be held 1:00pm Thursday, December 17th at Lamar First Baptist Church, with graveside service with military honors following at Florence National Cemetery, directed by Belk Funeral Home.
Born in Cleveland, OH on February 1, 1922, Edwin is the son of the late Edwin M. Slaughter, Sr., and the late Florence Black Slaughter. He served in the U.S. Air Force in the 6th Air Force Division in WWII, where he flew 80 missions, and the 5th Air Force Division during the Korean War, before retiring after 21 years of service from 1942-1963. Edwin then worked for the State of SC Employment Security Commission. He was a member of the Air Force Association, and the Retired Officers Association. Edwin served as a former Deacon for Lamar First Baptist Church, was a member of the Darlington Country Club, and a member of Evelyn Scarborough Sunday School Class.
Surviving in addition to his wife, Martha Watford Slaughter of Darlington, are his son, Edwin M. Slaughter III of Seattle, WA; his step-son, Kenneth Windham of Belmont, NC; his grandchildren, Jessica Slaughter (Todd) Ross, Summer Slaughter (Zach) Winslow, Gina (Bryan) Zeros, Loni (Josh) Frey, Rose (Orlando) Brinseno, Michael (Catherine) Windham, Crystal Windham, Ryan Windham, Joshua Windham, and 15 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his brother, Robert L. Slaughter, and two step-sons, Gene Windham, and Linwood Windham.
The family will receive friends from 6-8pm Wednesday, December 16th at Belk Funeral Home Lamar Chapel.
