Edward L James, Jr.

September 16, 1935 — September 21, 2025

It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Edward L. James Jr., known fondly as Ed, who left us peacefully on September 21, 2025, at the age of 90. He was born on September 16, 1935, in Darlington, South Carolina, where he spent the entirety of his cherished life.

Ed was a dedicated husband, father, and grandfather. He is survived by his loving wife, Sylvia James; their children, Ricky (Cheree) James; Debbie (Glenn) Suggs and a constellation of grandchildren and great-grandchildren who brought him immeasurable joy: Josh (Becky) Suggs, Tyler Suggs, Ryan (Kelsey) James, Mark (Jessica) James, as well as Perielle Suggs,  Colt, Reed, Elly, McKoy, and Lucy James. He was a caring figure whose legacy will live on through his family, who will forever remember him for his warmth and unwavering support.

A man of many talents, Ed proudly served for 25 years in the National Guard as a Medic, showcasing his commitment to service and compassion for others. In addition to his military dedication, he worked for the United States Postal Service and spent countless hours tending to the land he loved as a farmer. His passion for agriculture was evident, often eliciting playful remarks from Sylvia that he loved farming "too much." Operating his farm equipment brought him great joy, and he often found solace in the fields that nurtured his spirit.

Ed also had a zest for life outside of his work; he was an avid drag racing enthusiast, finding exhilaration in the thrill of the race. His adventures on the track were a testament to his spirited nature, always eager to embrace new experiences.

The family would like to especially thank Ed's caregiver's: Sarah Campbell, Liz Coward, Helen Ham, Ruby McFadden, Angela Soloman, and Madison Sturgeon.

The family invites friends and loved ones to honor Ed's life and legacy. Funeral services will be held at Indian Branch United Methodist Church, 2100 Indian Branch Rd, at 3:00 on Thursday with burial following in Indian Branch Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 6:00 until 8:00 Wednesday evening at Belk Funeral Home.

In this time of sorrow, we reflect on the rich life Ed led and the countless ways he touched those around him. He leaves behind a legacy of love, laughter, and resilience that will forever remain in our hearts. May he rest in peace, surrounded by the beauty of the fields he cherished and the memories of those he adored.

Ed was preceded in death by his parents: Edward L. James, Sr and Bessie Flowers James,  and sister, Melba Dudley, brother, Cotton James and an infant sister, Mildred James
