Doris Watterworth, age 97, passed away on Friday, August 30, 2024. A memorial service for Mrs. Watterworth will take place in Belk Funeral Home on Friday, September 6th at 2:00pm
Born in Darlington, South Carolina, December 25, 1926, the daughter of the late Kathryn Wicker Grinnell and Charles Alton Grinnell. She graduated from St. John's High School in 1943 and received a business degree from Winthrop College. After college, she worked as a secretary in the law offices of Samuel Want and James Verner. After her marriage, she worked in Michigan in plant personnel, in Virginia in the legal field, and was office manager in Hartsville, South Carolina. She retired from Clanton's Auto Auction of Darlington after thirteen years, where she served in several capacities.
Doris grew up in the Darlington Presbyterian Church and at the time of her death was a member of that church. She was active in Circle 1, a member of the Visitation Committee, and for many years was a volunteer at The Lord Cares Ministry. She was a voracious reader and enjoyed working out in an aerobics class for over ten years.
For more than forty years, she met at least three times a year with four of her dear friends from Winthrop. They were known as "The Winthrop Five." They took vacations together to the beaches and mountains and remained close by telephone and email.
She is survived by two grandsons, Christopher Jay Watterworth and Jeffrey Craig Watterworth.
In addition to her parents, Doris is preceded in death by S. Bruce Watterworth, her husband of sixty-two years, and her son, Charles Grinnell Watterworth.
