Alvin "Sam" Diggs, Jr. passed away on Friday, March 28th, 2025, at his home, surrounded by his loved ones. He was 71 years old, and his passing leaves a deep void in the hearts of all who knew him.
Sam was born to Alvin Diggs, Sr. and Barbara Wright Leonard in Chester, South Carolina, on July 14th, 1953. He was a devoted husband, father, friend, and known for his kindness, generosity, and sense of humor. Sam was deeply committed to his family and friends. A proud alumnus of the University of South Carolina, Sam graduated Magna Cum Laude, earning his Bachelor of Science degree along with a Minor in Business. His academic achievements were a testament to his hard work and dedication, and he carried the lessons he learned with him throughout his life and career. Sam retired from Santee Print Works in Sumter, SC, where he spent many years of his career. His dedication to his work and the relationships he built there left a lasting impact on his colleagues and friends. Sam was a diehard Gamecock fan who lived and breathed South Carolina sports. His love for all sports ran deep, and he enjoyed sharing his passion with those around him. Whether cheering for his Gamecocks or watching any other team play, his enthusiasm for sports was contagious, and his presence at a game or watch party will be missed. Above all, Sam cherished his time spent with his grandsons. He was especially fond of joking around with Dawson, always bringing laughter and joy into their lives. His playful spirit and love for family will be remembered by all who had the privilege of witnessing his warm interactions with his grandchildren.
Sam is survived by his wife, Paula Diggs; his sons, Justin (April) of Bennettsville, SC, Sammy Diggs, and Jonas Diggs of Chester, SC; daughters Lauren (Dave) Young of Bennettsville, SC, and Eugenia Diggs of Greenville, SC; his grandchildren, Dawson Sims, Draken Aston, Silas Galloway, Madison Galloway, Ava Diggs, Heidi Diggs, Samaria Diggs, Summer Aston, and Hunter Aston; and a host of extended family and friends.
Preceding Sam in death are his parents, Alvin Diggs, Sr. and Barbara Wright Leonard; his brothers, Russell Diggs and Allen Leonard; and his sister, Carla Peay.
A celebration of Sam's life will take place on Thursday, April 3rd, 2025 at 6pm at 2570 Williamette Road, Bennettsville, SC 29512. Family and friends will gather to honor his memory.
Sam's warmth, love, and laughter will be deeply missed, but his spirit will live on in the hearts of all who loved him.
