Ada Lee Wilkes Blackmon

November 25, 1944 — April 28, 2016

Mrs. Ada Lee Wilkes Blackmon passed away after a courageous battle against pancreatic cancer. A graveside service will be held at 4:00 P.M. on Sunday, May 1, 2016 at Grove Hill Cemetery in Darlington, South Carolina. The family will receive friends from 5:00 P.M. to 7:00 P.M. on Saturday, April 30, 2016 at Belk Funeral home in Darlington. Born November 25, 1944 in Scotland County, North Carolina, Ada or Ada Lee to those who knew her as a child, was the daughter of the late Deery Marlin Wilkes, Sr. and Ethel Lee Wilkes. Raised in McColl, South Carolina Mrs. Blackmon was a proud graduate of McColl High School and King's College in Charlotte, North Carolina. After graduating from college she moved to Darlington where she met her husband of forty-eight years, Heyward Nelson Blackmon, Sr. Mrs. Blackmon worked for Wilson Senior Care and its predecessors for over forty years. Known for her dedication and hard work Mrs. Blackmon often went above and beyond to help the residence that had little money and no family have the funerals that they deserved. She would work with the local funeral homes to insure they would leave this world with the dignity that everyone deserves. Mrs. Blackmon enjoyed spending time with her family and every Sunday afternoon she could be found seated at her dining table laden with steaming, homemade dishes humbly serving her husband and children. Known for her fabulous macaroni and cheese she would often claim that she really did not know how to cook, a claim that was debunked each Sunday by the cleaned plates and satisfied smiles around the table. Each summer since she was a child Mrs. Blackmon enjoyed spending time at White Lake, North Carolina. It was a tradition that she maintained until her health no longer allowed. Mrs. Blackmon was predeceased by her parents as well as her brothers, Keith B. Wilkes of Prosperity, South Carolina and Deery M. Wilkes, Jr. of McColl. She is survived by her devoted and loving husband Heyward as well as her two sons, Heyward Nelson Blackmon, Jr. and his wife GeorgeAnne of Darlington and Harry Arthur (Art) Blackmon, II also of Darlington. Mrs. Blackmon is survived by one granddaughter of whom she was most proud, Sarah Elizabeth Louise Blackmon. Memorials may be made to the First Baptist Church of Darlington, PO Box 297 Darlington, SC 28540 or to Darlington Presbyterian Church 311 Pearl Street, Darlington, SC 29532.
