Jeannette Odom Obituary

Jeannette Crews Odom, 76, affectionately known as "Amma" to the many who loved her, lost a courageously-fought battle with cancer but gained entrance to her Lord's Kingdom as she passed away on Sunday, March 10, 2019, at a local hospital.

Born in Andrews, South Carolina, on August 8, 1942, Jeannette was the daughter of Steven Martin and Claudine (Meads) Crews, both of Darlington. She is predeceased by her husband, Robert Allen Odom, of Darlington, and her brother, Steven Martin Crews, Jr., of Manning, South Carolina.

Jeannette attended Darlington's St. Johns High School where she excelled in her studies and was the school's marble tournament champion. She began her working career at the City of Darlington Water Department, and later worked as a Title Clerk at Watson Chevrolet. She retired in 2004 following 29 years of service as an Administrative Assistant for SC Department of Social Services.

Jeannette loved to go shopping, read, and watch her favorite shows on television. She loved and trusted in the promises of her Lord and will always be remembered by her many friends at Temple Free Will Baptist Church, where she was a member for more than 40 years. Jeannette served in a number of capacities over those years, but will be most remembered for her service as Church Secretary, Church Clerk, and Treasurer of her Sunday School class. She was an integral part of the church's Temple Treasures senior fellowship and could be found, every time the church doors opened, standing in the foyer, passing out bulletins, and greeting everyone with a smile and a hug. During her retirement, she selflessly devoted her time and effort to the people of her community as a volunteer at The Lord Cares ministry of Darlington.

Jeannette leaves behind two sons, Mauro (Michelle) Crews and James S. Harper, Jr., both of Darlington. She also leaves her love, and her hope that they will remember her fondly, to her five grandchildren: Alexander Crews, Caeli Crews, Evan Crews, Kryctine Matthews, and Whitney Matthews. Her love also extends to her six great-grandchildren: Gavin Crews, Natalie Matthews, Damien Cook, Jaxen Moxley, Thomas Moxley, and Logon Sapp, as well as many nieces, nephews, and cousins.

Funeral arrangements are being conducted by Belk Funeral Home of Darlington and will be held in the sanctuary of Temple Free Will Baptist Church, located at 1660 N. Governor Williams Highway, Darlington, SC. Visitation will begin at 3:00 p.m., and her Homegoing Funeral Service will commence at 4:00 p.m. on Thursday, March 14, 2019. A private burial service will follow at Grove Hill Cemetery in Darlington. In lieu of flowers, Jeannette's wishes were that memorials be made to the Temple FWB Church Debt Retirement account.
