Greta Capers Obituary

Greta Sue Shealy Ward Capers, 73, died Sunday, March 12, 2017, at the McLeod Hospice House following a courageous battle with lung cancer. Funeral services will be conducted on Wednesday, March 15, 2017, at 2:00 p.m. in the Darlington Presbyterian Church. The Reverend Kevin Cauley will officiate. Burial will follow in the Grove Hill Cemetery, directed by Belk Funeral Home.

Mrs. Capers was born in Breckenridge, Texas on June 25, 1943, the daughter of the late Mark Carlisle Shealy and Corey Odell Ward Shealy. After moving from Georgia, she graduated from Winthrop University. Later, she returned to school and graduated in Pharmacy from the University of South Carolina. She was a Child Welfare (Protective Services) Caseworker for the Department of Social Services before becoming a licensed Registered Pharmacist in 1977. As a pharmacist,
she worked in the family owned drug store on the square in Darlington, Central Drug Store, alongside her husband and father-in-law for over 30 years. She was later employed by CVS and Med Center Pharmacy until her retirement.

While attending the University of South Carolina School of Pharmacy, Greta was actively involved in many pharmacy associated organizations including Alpha Lambda Chapter of Kappa Epsilon Fraternity for Women in Pharmacy and Editor of the pharmacy school newspaper "The Papyrus."
Additionally, Greta was a past member of the South Carolina and Pee Dee Pharmacy Associations, past member of the American Society of Consultant Pharmacists, and past fellow of the American Society of Consultant Pharmacists.

In addition to her love for her chosen career in pharmacy, Greta was active in the local community as well as her church, Darlington Presbyterian Church. Greta was a charter member of the Darlington Professional Women and was selected as the Professional Woman of the
Year in 1995. She took great joy in attending the monthly programs of the Darlington Study Club both as a member and past president. Greta was actively involved in the Pilot Club of Darlington for many years (member and past president) and was recognized as the Pilot of the Year for 1981 - 82 and was a recipient of the South Carolina District Pilot Area Leader for Public Relations. Greta was a charter member and past president of the Friends of the Darlington County Library. She also taught Sunday School for many years. Of all her community efforts, Greta especially enjoyed her role as a Girl Scout Leader for many years, during which time she received advanced leadership
training and was a recipient of both the Outstanding Leader and Outstanding Volunteer awards. Greta was a past volunteer for the American Cancer Society, Heart Association, United Way, Easter Seals, Keep America Beautiful, and South Carolina Beach/River Sweep.
Nothing was more important to Greta than her family, whom she adored. Cherished memories include boating with family and friends, trips to the beach and river, and time spent in the company of family and friends. Greta enjoyed reading to such an extent that she has read
thousands of books in various genres. Prior to becoming ill, Greta took great pride in gardening and planting beautiful, colorful plants throughout her yard. Paintings created by Greta will be treasured by her family always. Greta delighted in playing bridge with "the girls" every month.

Surviving are her husband of fifty years, Edward Allen Capers, Jr., of the home; one son, William Van Ward, III (Ann) of Darlington; one daughter, Elizabeth Susan Shealy Capers Hart (Daniel) of Greenville; one brother, Mark Carlisle Shealy, Jr. (Scarlet) of Hartsville; a sister-in-law, Mrs. Adelaide Capers Johnson (Jim) of Greenville; six grandchildren she adored and cherished: Jennifer Nicole Ward, Zachary Van Ward, Garner Allen Hart, Ava Grace Shealy Hart, Sophie Capers Hart, and Drummond Monroe Hart; nieces, nephews, and cousins.
