FRED LEGARE, JR.
DARLINGTON
Fred "Sonny" Harrison Legare, Jr. of Bethea Baptist Retirement Community in
Darlington passed away February 27, 2010 at McLeod Regional Medical Center
in Florence. Born November 21, 1925 on Sullivans Island, S. C., Mr. Legare was
the eldest son of Frederick H. and Henrietta Moore Legare. Upon graduation from
General William Moultrie High School in Mt. Pleasant, he enlisted in the Naval Air
Force Reserve, serving his country during World War II. After the war, he returned
to his beloved island and married his first wife, Kathryn Ferguson, by whom he had
three children, Frederick H. Legare, III, Charles Alan Legare, and Michele Legare.
His second marriage was to Evelyn Hughes Warrick, and he welcomed her son,
Dr. Kenneth Warrick into his life.
Mr. Legare enjoyed over 40 years experience as an estimator for several commercial
contractors in the Charleston area before retiring in 1988. He was a member of
Church of the Holy Cross, of Sullivans Island, under the Watchcare program at
Bethea Baptist Church in Darlington, and was a member of American Legion Post 136
in Mt. Pleasant. An extraordinary man who loved life, he enjoyed fishing, tell stories
about growing up on the island, the sun-filled days catching fresh shrimp for supper,
and the smell of salt air. He will be deeply missed by his family and many friends.
Mr. Legare is survived by his second wife, Evelyn Hughes Warrick Legare of the home,
his sons, Frederick H. Legare,III of Ravenel and Charles Alan Legare of Florida, his
daughter, Michele Legare Sullivan (Jeff) of Mt. Pleasant, his step-son, Dr. Kenneth
Warrick (Diane) of Tennessee, his grandchildren, Frederick (Drake) H. Legare, IV,
Rachel Sullivan Sawyers (Jeff), Megan Sullivan, Jordan Sullivan, all of Mt. Pleasant,
his step-grandson, Dr. Todd Warrick (Pressley), three step-great-grandchildren,
all of Sumter, and a sister, Doris Legare Dayhoff of Mt. Pleasant. He was predeceased
by his parents, his first wife, Kathryn Ferguson Legare, and a brother, Louis N. Legare.
Service will be held at Bethea Baptist Church in Darlington, Wednesday, March 3, 2010 at 2:00 PM.
A graveside service will be held at a later date at Mt. Pleasant Memorial Gardens in
Mt. Pleasant.
