Sammie Benjamin Anderson III, 74, died May 22, 2017 at home after an illness. Born in Darlington, SC, January 16, 1943, he was the son of Sammie and Marguerite Anderson. He was a graduate of St. John's High School, Class of 1961. He served in the SC Army National Guard for 8 years. After 45 ½ years at Sonoco Products Co. in Hartsville as a machinist, he retired in Jan. 2008. Bennie also, after retirement, worked with Belk Funeral Home. The almost 9 years he worked with Sidney and Curry Belk were the most fulfilling and blessed years during his work life.
Surviving is his wife Mary Della Anderson and his three children: Benjamin Tracy (Carol) Anderson of Hartsville; James Christian (Chris) Anderson of Effingham; Heather Lea-Margaret (Lt. Col. Jacob) Corbett of New Baltimore, MI; three grandchildren - Sarah (David) Anderson, Coby Anderson, Hunter Corbett and one great-grandchild, Peyton Gulledge; a brother, Wayne Everett Anderson - Children: Andy Anderson, Joey (Tammie) Anderson, Angie (Tim) Kirven; a sister, Sandra Marguerite (Delton) Munn - Children: Sherri (Jeff) Helton and Amber (Eric) Jacobs; three great nieces: Haley (Austin) Rogers, Whitney Helton, Anna Morgan Jacobs; one great nephew Zachary Jacobs; loving in-laws Tommy and Peggy Smith.
Funeral services will be conducted at 11 am Thursday, May 25th, First Church of God, 620 N. Main St, Darlington, SC 29532, with Rev. Kendall Williams officiating. Burial will take place in Grove Hill Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 5-7 pm Wednesday, May 24th at Belk Funeral Home.
Pall Bearers will be Ron Anderson and Tony Anderson of Darlington; Jeff Helton of Florence, Wiley Hodge, Hilton Howle of Hartsville; Eddie Lewis of Timmonsville.
Honorary family are Carroll Boswell of Darlington and David Stewart of Lamar.
The family would like to thank Dr. James Smith, MRMC Oncology & Hematology Assoc.; Dr. Michael Hsia, Carolina Urology; and Dr. C. Lynne Maroney, MD, of McLeod Internal Medicine Assoc. for their excellent, compassionate and tender care of Bennie. They also thank the McLeod Home Health and McLeod Hospice nurses for their proficient and compassionate care. We thank all the staff and techs on the 7th floor oncology at McLeod's Regional Medical Center for their care, thoughtfulness and professionalism. Bennie's family graciously thanks Sidney and Linda Belk, Curry and Tiffany Belk, Jaby Belk, Will Peavy, and Eaddy Brown for their love and friendship during his years working with them.
The family of Bennie Anderson thanks all of our friends and relatives who have prayed and visited while he has been on this journey that has taken him home to Jesus. He was one of the truest Christian men we could ever know and he lived the Christian example and was the very best husband, father, and friend!
